A bare-chested man suspected of attempting to break into a house using a 10-inch shard of slate was stopped in his tracks when confronted by a police dog named after the Norse god associated with protecting mankind.

Hafod Jones surrendered to Dyfed-Powys officers after getting sight of the German Shepherd called Thor.

The sight of the teeth-baring canine turned the ‘armed’ intruder into a sheepish would-be offender.

Officers were called to a property in Carmarthen on Tuesday, following reports of a disturbance.

But on arrival, police dog Thor, and his handler approached the 24-year-old.

And after seeing the animal, Jones, from Carmarthen, gave himself up and released the weapon.

A tweet from the force read: "PD Thor and handler responded to reports of a male with [knife emoji] trying to break into a [house emoji] in Carmarthen this afternoon.

"The team confronted a bare chested male brandishing what turned out to be a 10 inch long shard of slate.

"He saw that Thor meant business, dropped the object and surrendered."

Jones appeared at Llanelli Magistrates' Court last week.

After entering guilty pleas to the charges of criminal damage, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and use of threatening behaviour with intent to cause fear, he was given a community order for two years which includes unpaid work, rehabilitation activity and alcohol treatment.
