A distraught and lonely elderly couple were comforted by officers who made them pasta after an emergency call.

Police were directed to a block of flats in the Appio area of Rome after a neighbour reported hearing shouting and crying.

Four officers arrived at the flat to find Jole, 84, and her 94-year-old husband Michele home but the couple hadn’t committed a crime and there were no signs of a break-in.

The couple had been watching TV and said they have become overwhelmed by loneliness and sadness at current global events, causing them to cry out and sob loudly.

They told police it had been a long time since anyone had visited them and there was little evidence they had been eating properly.

Police called an ambulance to check the couple over and decided to make them a bowl of pasta while they waited.

Rome Police shared the story on its Facebook page where it has more than 55,000 likes and over 23,000 shares.
